International Left-Handers DayWhat is Left-Handers Day?Left-Handers Day is your very own annual awareness day, always held on 13th August - a sinister date for a sinistral celebration! The Left-Handers Club organise the day to raise awareness of issues our members wish to highlight. Over the 15 years we have been celebrating the Day, the messages we have delivered have been responsible for greater understanding and consideration of left-handers' needs in product design, public services, and schools.
How do you get the message across?By making it fun! Left-handedness is not a handicap, and for most of us the creativity and adaptability we left-handers share is a huge bonus. For this reason, we always try to make our Left-Handers Day message very positive, celebrating the advantages of being left-handed, and where appropriate using humour to highlighting the unnecessary right-hand bias that causes most of our problems and frustrations. How can I contribute?Like many of our Club Members, your contribution to the Day might just be by filling in a quick online questionnaire for us, giving us your views on the topic we are highlighting. You may remember last year our "Is it me?" issue highlighting different quirks and habits people adopt that were actually due to being left-handed. (link) This generated lots of interest, and the results and anecdotes you privided were widely reported in the press. Spread the word about our dedicated website, www.lefthandersday.com. The site is filled with fascinating facts, online quizzes, games and other activities, and the chance to win great left-handed prizes. Your left-handed friends can join the LHC for free, and take part in our online survey to make their views count. There is also an opportunity to take a more active part in the celebrations, and bring the message home to those right-handers you live and work with every day. Lots of you use our free downloadable "Lefty Zone" posters to create a designated area in your home, school or office, where everyone has to use their left-hand for all tasks - making them realise how awkward right-handed layouts and equipment are to use backwards, and helping them appreciate we're not as clumsy as we seem! Always great fun, and very effective! If you give us notice of the event, you might even get a visit from your local newspaper/radio station - generating great publicity for your school or business!
Why is it important?The Left-Handers' Club represents the views of 50,000 left-handers worldwide - a responsibility we take very seriously. Over the years, the LHC have continued to build the profile of the annual Left-Handers Day which generates huge media attention worldwide, and is a highly effective voice for left-handers everywhere to put their point of view.
