Left handed bread knife

Most “normal” bread knives for right-handers are serrated on the LEFT of the blade – the idea being that the effect of the serrations counter-acts the natural inward (clockwise as you see it) twisting action of the right hand, leading to a straight cut. If a left-hander uses one of these knives, the serrations actually EMPHASIZE the natural anti-clockwise twisting motion of the left hand which leads to the classic “overhanging” loaf . Our left handed bread knives are serrated on the RIGHT side of the blade to give the correct balanced action for left-handers and generally people are very pleased that they can suddenly cut straight!

http://www.anythinglefthanded.co.uk/acatalog/stabilo_smove_pens.html - Stabilo pens and pencils help children with handwriting - smove Easy pens are easy to hold, reduce smudging - left handed version

Stabilo Easy pens and pencils

The unique Stabilo Easy pens and pencils have been made with a special left handed version with the grip moulded for a comfortable fit in the left hand. Top marks to Stabilo for looking after the left-handers for a change!

If children are to learn well, they must be holding their pen or pencil in a comfortable position and minimise pressure so they can write or paint in a relaxed manner. With STABILO, right-and left-handed users can choose the STABILO EASYergonomics version developed specially for them. STABILO is the first writing instrument manufacturer to develop pens offering these ergonomic benefits.

In addition, thanks to the pens’ low weight and ergonomic shape, the hand muscles do not tire prematurely. The result: children and adolescents can concentrate for longer periods of time and have more fun when writing or drawing.

Playing Cards Marked in 4 Corners
Traditional playing cards have the numbers top right and bottom left so if you fan them in your right hand (so you can pick and play left-handed) you cannot see what you have got! The simple answer is a set of cards that are marked in all four corners.

The following message comes from a TV Documentary Maker and fellow leftie who visited our offices recently to interview us for a fascinating project in which many of our members may wish to take part:-

Dear (fellow) Left-handers,

My name is Will Aspinall and I am an established documentary maker for such broadcasters as the BBC and the Discovery Channel. I am now making a film concerning the experience of left-handers in modern combat and I am asking for assistance in its creation.

There has been a study of left-handers in WWI and WWII, where it was found that sinistrals have a far higher mortality rate than their right-handed comrades. The study (Handedness and longevity: archival study of cricketers by John Aggleton, BMJ) does not attempt to solve the ultimate question: why?

My film aims to take this research to the present day, in order to both solve the “why?” question and to see if left-handers have fared better in post-WWII conflicts. My theory is that just as we face difficulties with right-handed tools in everyday life, similar –and more grave- difficulties face the left-handed soldier with the right-handed rifle and other weapons.

Initial research has led me to believe that left-handedness is not registered in the recruitment process of the British armed forces, and left-handed recruits are therefore given the same training and weaponry as right-handers with potentially damaging results.

Having already filmed our newsletter editors, Lauren and Keith, I am now looking for people across the world who fulfill the following criteria-

are left-handed and have been in the armed forces.

have a relative or left-handed friend who was involved in the armed forces.

are left-handed and was injured during combat.

know of someone that was left-handed who was injured/ killed in action.

may have information in the design of modern weaponry/ military training who can help my study.

This is the start of a personal journey and I would be very grateful for your assistance.
Click here to email me if you would like to be involved in any way (willaspinall at yahoo dot co dot uk)

Many thanks
Will
